How to reduce the file size of an image

  1. Choose the image or drag it into the box.
  2. Move the quality slider until you find the point where the photo still looks good.
  3. If it is still too heavy, limit the maximum width or switch the format to WebP.
  4. Check the original size, the new size and the percentage saved, then download.

Limiting the width to 1920 px is usually the most effective way to shrink photos taken with a phone, which normally have more pixels than a screen can show. If you also need an exact size, use the image resizer.

JPG, PNG or WebP?

  • JPG: ideal for photos. Doesn't support transparency.
  • PNG: for logos, screenshots and transparent backgrounds. No quality loss, but a bigger file.
  • WebP: modern format, lighter than JPG and with transparency. Current browsers can open it.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to the internet?

No. The whole process happens in your browser. The image never leaves your device.

Is quality lost when compressing?

With JPG and WebP, information the eye barely notices is discarded. From 70% quality up, the difference is usually minimal. PNG doesn't lose quality.

Why is the compressed file larger?

It happens when the original image was already well optimized or when converting to PNG. Try another quality, another format or limit the width.

Is the EXIF data (camera, location) kept?

No. Processing the image removes the metadata, which also protects your privacy.
